use DBCC PAGE to manually extract data. Very slow, very time consuming, and
no guarantees. I've only had to do it once and it wasn't very pretty.

a clause of the query contained only ignored words

Hi,
I don't want any noise words at all for my current application, so have
cleared out the noise.enu file so it is 0 bytes and re-built the catalog
I am pretty sure it is working ok because I can search on 'the' and 'of' etc
which I couldn't do before. however, if I try to search on a single letter,
I still get the old 'only ignored words' error message.
am I hitting on some different limitation here, or is there anything else
that could cause this problem?

noise.enu is for us english. noise.eng is for the Queens English.
Which word breaker are you using?
Did you edit the noise word lists found in c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL\FTData\SQLServer\config?
You have to stop MSSearch, make your edits and then restart MSSearch.
Note, to find these noise words in your searches you will have to rebuild
your catalog.
A freetext search will not generate this error.

when I select @.@.language it returns "us_english", but the full-text indexed
columns are actually SQL_Latin1_General_CP1253_CI_AI (greek). There is a
small story behind this which may be relevant:
Most of the columns in the database are SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS and the
values contain some french acccented characters. When we first built the
text index we wanted it to be accent-insensitive but this is apparently only
possible in the sharepoint version of FTS not in the SQL server version. As
a workaround we created a separate copy of the data to be indexed which uses
the greek character set. Just before the index population, we copy the data
from the CP1 columns into the CP1253 columns which has the effect of
removing all the accents, so the only characters left in AFAIK are us
english ones.

sorry the turnaround on this is so slow but this isn't my day job so I have
to work odd hours at it.
I did the MShelpcolumns and it returned 1033 as expected. I also ran the VBS
script and it said there was just one search application, namely SQL Server
More interestingly, I created a couple of test tables, one with CP1253 and
one with the default CP1, in a brand new database and new full text catalog.
both tables exhibited the same symptoms as my original problem i.e. I can
search for 'the' but not 'a'
I then tried the same process on a different machine (again with an empty
noise.enu) and both searches worked i.e. the result I was looking for.
I noticed that the original machine was only on SQL 2000 SP2, so I upgraded
it to SP3. However, this doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.
so at the moment I have two machines, the non-working one is win2k server
sp4 running sql server 2000 standard sp3, and the working one is winxp sp1
running sql server 2000 developer sp3. both are using us english word
breaker and an empty noise.enu file.
do you have any idea what other difference might be causing this problem?
The non-working machine has quite a lot of other stuff installed on it but
nothing that I can think would interfere

sorry - excluse my julilation - that was the solution.
my noise file was 0 bytes long. putting a blank space in the noise file and
re-indexing causes it to work correctly.
Just to recap on the symptoms as the previous email maybe wasn't clear
enough. with a 0 byte noise file, it's possible to correctly search on 'the'
or any normal noise word, but searching for a single letter term gave the
error about 'a clause of the query contained only ignored words'. With a
noise file containing a blank like, a search for a single letter works
correctly. Everything about the character sets/word breakers and the service
pack was irrelevant in this case.
Thank you very much for your help in this case - I don't know how I would
have found it otherwise. Now I know what to search for, I have found a bit
of other discussion about this topic on the net.

a bulk insert question

I was given a text file to use to insert bulk-ly into a table.

The file is made up in a way that at the end of each line it has a very very long line of spaces (i.e a string). The last column in the table is supposed to accepted an nvarchar no bigger than 3. I know there's a possibility to increase the size of the nvarchar, but I want to avoid putting the string of spaces in the table.

How can I over come the problem with the file? obviously deleting each row of spaces is too much trouble for a file that has over 40000 rows...

I often consider it a good practice to first load data to a 'staging' table, a table with no constraints, indexes, etc.

Then after the data has been loaded, it is easy to have other procedures that 'cleanse' or conform the data before loading into the destination table. I can identify exceptions and set them aside for further inspection, I can 'transform' data into whatever form is required by the database, for example, 0 and 1 may be stored as 'M' and 'F' in the database (or vice-versa.)

I never assume that imported data will always meet the requirements of the database.

CHECKDB of every DB on that server came up clean (0
allocation and 0 consistency errors). Could this
effectively mean that I've discovered a bug in SQL Server?

OskAs you alluded to, this typically indicates corruption in your database.
However, there is a potential for in-memory kinds of corruption events in
which the page in memory is corrupted, but the image on disk is not. That
is most often caused by hardware issues. I would recommend that you open a
case with Microsoft PSS (http://support.microsoft.com) after you have
verified that you have no hardware issues.

Hi June,
Some things to check:
- Are you sure the SQL Server 2000 service is running, and that the
computer that runs this script and the server where SQL Server is
installled can "see" each other?
- Try adding the "-S servername[\instance_name]" argument
- Try using a trusted connection instead of a SQL Server login (ie
replace the "-U -P" arguments with "-T").
- If you can't use a trusted connection, double-check that SQL Server is
configured to allow "Mixed Mode Authentication". The default is "Windows
Authentication", which allows only trusted connections. Also, add userid
and password to the command string (i.e. replace "-U -P" with "-U userid
-P password").
- Check the Client Network Utility on the workstation and the Server
Network Utility on the server. Are the same protocols enabled? Are the
properties the same? If there are any firewalls between the workstation
and the server, have you made sure that the prots required for SQL
Server are not blocked?

1. Both the command file and SQL server are running on the same machine
(Win2000).
2. I have tried to add -S [instance_name] parameter to the command line, but
I got similar error messages:
SQLState = 08001, Native Error=17
Error=[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not
exist or access denied.
SQLState = 01000, Native Error=53
Warning=[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server
Driver][DBNETLIB]ConnectionOpen(Connect()).
3. I also tired to replace -T with -U -P, still got the same error.
What else should I try?

The correct usage of -S is either
-S server_name
or
-S server_name\instance_name

9MB of errors in log file each time RS report is run

I have a report that is running extremely slowly. The Reporting
Services log files seem to generate 9MB of errors each time I run the
report. The error is the text below repeated over and over. Can anyone
help?

The reporting services is generating large log files of 9GB daily and using
all the virtual memory that all applications on my win2003 server stop
running. Application is running on sql server 2000 and Microsoft Report
Server SP1.
How do I go about trouble-shooting this?

Is it the ReportServerTempDB log or ReportServer log? (it better not be the
ReportServer log...)
Or do you mean the actual LOG files in the reportserver directory? (these
are text files)
One thing you can check quickly, make sure the ReportServerTempDB database
is set to simple recovery mode.

7.0 vs 2000?

I hope I can explain this correctly...

I have a developer that runs a batch file to delete the current parts from the database. The batch file calls a prorietary Java class file (Trilogy) to delete the parts and it simply returns a "null". I don't know whats making it return null.

Note: We have the same DB on a 7.0 Instance and a 2000 Instance. The batch file works against the 7.0 Instance and not against the 2000 Instance.

I'm wondering if possibly it's a Server setting? I'm not sure where to begin with this one.The first thing I'd check would be the logs. Any output (logfile, console, or other) from the Java app would be first, then the SQL Server log file, the NT logs, and anything else that seems appropriate.

The next thing I'd do would be to sic the SQL Profiler on the little beastie, and watch what it is doing. The exact steps will vary a lot depending on your configuration, but the process isn't too complex.

If none of those give you any clues, then you have a real puzzle! Those can still be solved, but they are a lot harder.

i just got a disk w/ a .bak file on it. when i tried to restore it on
my 2000 sql server instance it said the format was invalid. so, would i
get this error if the .bak version was created using version 7.0?

FILELISTONLY arguments of the RESTORE statement for the backup.

of SQL Server 7.0, but I think that SQL Server 2000 would give a more descriptive error message.

On my PC I noticed that my msdbdata.mdf file grew to over 6GB. I did sp_spaceused on each of the tables and they are all OK. I looked at the queues and they also seemed OK. I finally looked at the properties and seen that it cannot be shrink since it is 95 percent used.

Any ideas on how I can get it back to normal size?

you may be knowing that msdb database is used SQL SERVER AGENT ( SQL Scheduller) by for all scheduled work in sql server instance. You backup history, DTS Versions, Job history related table may grow over a period of time and there by your MSDB Database can grow. check all these table and if not required delete the history.

Have you changed the amount of job history to keep in the SQL Agent? Do you have lots of DTS packages? Are the DTS packages setup to log there status to the SQL Server?

These things all take up space in the msdb database.

You can use the sp_dump_dtslog_all command to remove the DTS log information.

You can use the sys.destination_data_spaces command to remove SQL Agent Log Information.

I'd look at the disk array first, make sure you have the latest drivers,
that there's no hardware issues, etc.
