Does SQL server 2005 places a few VARBINARY(MAX) values on a single page if
the length of those values are let's say 2KB?

Hi Alex
Varbinary(max) data will actually be placed in the data row itself if there
is room.
You can set the table property to store all large objects out of the row,
and then varbinary(max) is treated just like image.
Image columns from the same table CAN share space on the same pages for
greater storage space efficiency.

A few BLOBs per page

8K/page limit
Hi there,
Does the 8K/page (row) limit also involve views? We're trying to insert a
record into a view (via nested instead of insert triggers) and the query
results in:
Server: Msg 8152, Level 16, State 9, Procedure CIM_LogicalDevice_UPD, Line 1
String or binary data would be truncated.
The statement has been terminated.
The view is made up of tables of which none are exceeding the 8K limiet. The
query does not pass [n][var]char values bigger than defined on table level.
Any clues?

Preceding the T-SQL with a "SET ANSI_WARNINGS OFF" results in a succesful
insert (and all columns are populated correctly) but we don't feel quite
comfortable yet :-|
I've checked books online: there are no aggregate functions involved, nor
binary or varbinary data, nor distributed queries.
Any thoughts?

SLE|||The error indicates that you _are_ passing character values that are larger
than the columns they are stored in. If the row size was the problem you
would get a different error message. Are you not accidentally passing a char
to a varchar column? I assume you have checked your code already, but the
only explanation I can give at this moment is that you have missed
something. If you're sure you haven't can you please post your code so we
can have a look through it?

Does the 8K/page (row) limit also involve views? We're trying to insert a
record into a view (via nested instead of insert triggers) and the query
results in:
Server: Msg 8152, Level 16, State 9, Procedure CIM_LogicalDevice_UPD, Line 1
String or binary data would be truncated.
The statement has been terminated.
The view is made up of tables of which none are exceeding the 8K limiet. The
query does not pass [n][var]char values bigger than defined on table level.
Any clues?

FYI:
Preceding the T-SQL with a "SET ANSI_WARNINGS OFF" results in a succesful
insert (and all columns are populated correctly) but we don't feel quite
comfortable yet :-|
I've checked books online: there are no aggregate functions involved, nor
binary or varbinary data, nor distributed queries.
Any thoughts?

64-bit Restore via 32-bit GUI
Hello all,
I'm trying to use the 32-bit GUI, on a remote server, to restore a database
on one of our 64-bit servers. The GUI returns a prompt that the restore was
successful but the GUI indicates that the database is in a Loading mode. I
tried to issue a recovery command but it fails saying that some of the files
were partially restored.
I figured that there is a problem using the 32-bit client utility so I used
OSQL, via SQL Server Agent, on the 64-bit to ensure that I was using a
compatible 64-bit utility. By doing so, I was able to restore the database
successfully.
So my question is, is not being able to restore a 64-bit database via a
32-bit GUI, on a remote server, a known issue?

sending it to the server. Try it again with EM but capture the command with
profiler. You can then determine if the command generated is good. Did you
change the recovery to Leave database nonoperational?

I figured that there is a problem using the 32-bit client utility so I used
OSQL, via SQL Server Agent, on the 64-bit to ensure that I was using a
compatible 64-bit utility. By doing so, I was able to restore the database
successfully.
So my question is, is not being able to restore a 64-bit database via a
32-bit GUI, on a remote server, a known issue?
Thanks...Not that I'm aware of. EM is simply building the restore command and
sending it to the server. Try it again with EM but capture the command with
profiler. You can then determine if the command generated is good. Did you
change the recovery to Leave database nonoperational?

64bit Primary with 32bit Secondary SQL 2005
Currently I have a standby server which is kept in synch from the primary via
log-shipping. Both are running SQL 2005 Standard sp1, on Windows 2003 Server
w/sp1. My primary is 64bit capable, but my secondary is not. Are there any
concerns running the primary as x64bit with log-shipping to a 32-bit machine
(other than performance and memory differences). Occasionaly I have to
switch production apps between the two servers. The log-shipping is a simple
tlog backup/restore, not Microsoft's log-shipping.That should not be a problem.

64 bit ntwdblib.dll
We are currently installing SQL Server 2005 on 32 bit platforms as well as
EM64T platforms. In addition to accessing it via OLE DB and ODBC, we also
still use the API Library which requires ntwdblib.dll. This is not included
with SQL Server 2005 and is identified as one of the deprecated features
that will be dropped completely in a future release. Furthermore, MS goes
to say that you need to copy the ntwdblib.dll from a previous version of SQL
Server to get it to work. This works fine on the 32 bit platforms since we
have SQL Server 2000. However, on the EM64T platform there is no previous
64 bit version since the 64 bit version of SQL Server 2000 was only
supported on the Itanium processor. Is there a way to use SQL Server 2005 in
64 bit mode and access it from the API Library interface?

6.5 upgrade
I am having trouble upgrading from SQL 6.4 to SQL 2000
using the wizard.
The wizard runs nicely until I get to 'Export and Import
via Named pipes', then I get the following message:

401 Web Service Access
Hi,
We are getting a 401 unauthorized error when trying to create subscriptions
via a web service from our .Net. The server is Windows Server 2003 with SP1
and Reporting Services with SP2.
The frustration is that one of our servers is fine with this setup and the
other one is giving the 401 error! I have tried adding the DWORD registry
entry as commonly suggested, but have had no luck (the server that works
doesn't have this entry either).
Would anyone therefore be ale to offer any solutions?

400 Linked Server to SQL Server via IBMDA400
I am running V5R2 on client and am trying to link a 400 from SQL Server
2000.
Can this be done using IBMDA400?
I have gotten to a point with the IBM DB2 UDB that I can connect without
error. But now I can't see my tables.
This is what I am using for my provider string:
User ID=USERNAME;Password=PASSWORD;Initial Catalog=DATABASE_NAME;Data
Source=AS_400_SERVER_NAME
I have also checked the In Process checkbox that some have talked about
needing to be checked.
Any assistance is appreciated.

Add "Catalog Library List=Lib1 Lib2 Lib3" in the connect string where "Lib1
Lib2 Lib3" is the list of your iseries library you want to browse the tables
and views. The list can be space separated or coma separated.
